Holiday Safety Tips
This is a guest blog from our friends at Robert D. Erney & Associates.
The holiday season is a time for joy and celebration. Unfortunately, there are also many safety hazards that can negatively affect your holiday plans. From huge crowds in the shopping malls to the fire hazards posed by Christmas lights, the holidays come with many situations in which your personal safety may be at risk. With the following holiday safety tips, you will be able to enjoy the season to its fullest extent.
Shopping Safely
One aspect of the holidays that poses multiple safety concerns is holiday shopping. In crowded shopping malls, slip and fall accidents, theft, and assault are some of the major potential risks. To stay safe when shopping, first wear safe, comfortable shoes to avoid tripping and falling. Try to shop during the daytime or with a friend to deter theft. Keep your valuables close to your body, always be aware of your surroundings, and store your purchases in the trunk of your car to keep them safer.
Another important aspect of shopping safely is avoiding products that have been recalled. In particular, toy recalls can pose a threat to your children. Always be aware of what products have been recalled, and keep your receipts and original packaging in case you need to file a claim. Always purchase age-appropriate toys, and check the manufacturer’s warnings before buying.
Avoiding Fire Hazards
During the holidays, fire hazards come from a variety of sources. If you are purchasing a Christmas tree, be sure to buy a fresh, green tree as they are less of a fire hazard. You can tell that a tree is fresh because its needles will be difficult to remove and its trunk will have resin, a sticky substance. Never use real candles to decorate your tree, and if you do use candles around the house, ensure that they are always being monitored and safely placed.
In addition, try to use flame-resistant decorations, and always have a screen in your fireplace when it is in use. Never use old or broken lights, only use lights rated for outdoor use in the exterior of your home, and always turn off the lights when you leave the house or go to sleep.
Holiday Driving
Another concern during the holiday is driving, both due to icy roads and the increase in drunk driving. To stay safe on the road, keep up with vehicle maintenance and have a survival kit on hand. Follow the speed limit and be especially wary of bridges because they freeze first. Brake gently to avoid skidding, and ensure that there is plenty of space between your cars and other cars. Use a de-icing windshield fluid, and consider switching your regular tires for snow tires. Finally, never drive while intoxicated, and do not let intoxicated guests drive home.
If you face an injury during the holiday season, a personal injury lawyer can provide the legal help you need. Whether you faced a defective product, car accident, or slip and fall injury, contact a personal injury lawyer today to find out if you have a potential claim.
